An apology To Tobacco

you built this country
you devil plant you
you were our life blood for so long
keeping the purities, Quakes, and other yokels out the poor house

In the 20th, we idolized you.
All the cool people were kissing you
they kissed and told
Getting popular by making love to you

Then the corporates
with their desire of efficiency
they dolled you up, injected you with chemicals
and turned you into an addiction

Then came the PC age
with its secular crusaders for public safety
they pointed to what the corporates did
blaming it on you, "the bitch wanted it"

As a child, i heard their hate speech
spoken from creatures of the forest
Rabbits and Teddies and wise old owls,
Propaganda manchines screaming "Death to Ciggarettes!"

And then i kissed you
It was my choice, no one elses
And you got into my system
Now i kneel at your feet

So im dying at your feet
Even as i swear to quit
In love, my insides dry out
in my sweet apology to you
